Preliminary Task

SCRIPT

The script was created by my self and Danah Hussain but was discussed by everybody in the group. We had trouble creating an interesting conversation with the idea of a person entering a room and sitting down. We decided to have an ordinary, short conversation about a holiday that Danah wnet on. With that idea it was relatively easy and we came up with about 45 seconds of dialogue. We made the conversation sound real and typed it out as it is to be said for example 'ya' instead of 'you' because this is how we would talk.

Having a script was important because there needed to be some dialogue in the film.

LOCATION RECCE

The group went up to the PS room 2 and we decided on what shots to take in order to get the whole room in the shot. The shots were taken by Chris Grey but discussed by the group. Chris then uploaded the images and wrote down the details of the rooms. The details included the location, the lighting, the plug sockets in the room and permission for filming. Then Chris converted the file to a JPEG so it could be uploaded onto the blog. We had to produce a Location recce so that we could make sure the room was ok to film in in terms of lighting, power etc. The lighting had to be right for shots so that myself and Danah were seen clearly. There was little difficulty creating the Location recce.

RISK ASSESSMENT

The risk assessment was decided by the group and created by myself. We looked at the PS room and analysed all the risks in the room that could possibly harm someone. There was not many risks around the room as it is a school so most hazards are dealt with. It was not a difficult document o produce i simply wrote down what the risks were and how we were to overcome them. The reason we made the risk assessment was so that none of us were injured whilst filming.

The shot list was discussed by the
group and produced by Chris Grey. We decided to use match on action and shot reverse shot with the script which was to take up most of the filming. The shot list was easy to produce as we used the script to help us decide who the camera is on, in order to get the expressions and reactions of the actors. We produced a shot list so that when we were filming we knew what to do and what to do next it made the filming flow easily.

STORY BOARD

The shot list was produced by everyone in the group as we all drew scenes in the boxes. it was a simple document to produce except the drawing skills in the group were poor but ok to understand with the writen notes next to them. We made the story board as another aid for the filming.

Filming
Filming was done by Chris Grey, Directing by Anton Richards and acting by myself and Danah Hussain. Filming was okay to do although we had a few problems. This the main problem was that the storyboard and shot list did not have enough shots in for the shot reverse shot and the match on action we had hoped for when writing the script. So we did not follow the storyboard and shot list closely but was still basically the same with many more shots. But we worked well as a team and stuck with the 180 degree rule as our story board did not stick with this, and got some good shots including the over the shoulder shot. The lighting was good as we could see the actors clearly through the camera. After taking action with the risk assessment the PSroom was safe to film in with out the risks of injuries. There was also a little problem with the actors. Having no previous experience of acting made it difficult to film as often they would make ammature mistakes such as looking at the camera, forgetting lines and bursting into laughter. This made filming take longer than expected.

Editing

Logging
Logging involved a lot of tedious work on the computer. The camera was plugged into the computer and we took the recorded clips off and saved them. We had to write down the start and end time of each shot regardless if we were to use it or not. This took quite long as we also had to describe what was happening in the shot and write 'yes' or 'no' in the table (where we were recording the logging). Logging is a vital document to produce as it is used like a tool in filtering all the shots we needed.

Rough cut
The process rough cut involved putting the clips recorded into the correct order on the Timeline in the Adobe Premier Pro software. Here is where the logging document was used to take only the clips that were needed and not the others. To ensure we didn't get any unwanted clips or sound we watched it carefully

Editing
Editing is where we were cutting and changing clips and sound. Our clips had a few unwanted sounds so we had to get rid of them which took quite a lot of time and patients. What we had to do on the timeline was turn down the volume of of the unwanted sound permanently and replace it with a quiet sound from another part of another clip. And as the only microphone we had was attached to the camera the further away from the camera the actors were the quieter they appeared. So what we had to do was increase the volume on the time line when the far away actors were speaking. And at the start and end of each shot we overlapped it slightly and sloped the volume down so the sound was constant. All we really changed in the editing was the sound and the clips we didn't want. Doing the editing for a short 1 minute film has shown me how much effort goes into editing longer programs and films as it takes up most of the time in making pictures. As it took us hours to edit a single minutes viewing time.

08/09/2008 Media

  • Continuity is when nothing changes about someone between scenes. For instance if someone in a scene picks up a cup with thier right hand, in the following scene the cup is to be in the same hand.

  • In frames people should not be drawn as stick men.

  • Arrows inside the frame box indicates a characters movement.

  • Arrows outside the box shows the direction of the cameras movement.

  • Tilting the camera is rotating it upwards and downwards where jibing is moving the camera upwards and downwards.

  • Panning is rotating the camera sideways and tracking is moving the camera sideways

  • The 180 degree rule is where there is a straight line which no camera should cross so that a moving object always appears to be travelling in the same direction.
  • Diegetic sound is when you can see the source of sound. Non deigetic sound is when you cannot see the source.

  • Shot reverse shot is when shots cnahge between 2 cameras

SHOT SIZES

This is a persons face and when the camera shows this much of a face it is called an Extreme Close Up (ECU)

Medium Close Up (MCU) is when you can see a persons head and shoulders but not the arm pit, you may also see a part of the horizon.

3 Quarter shot is when you can see a person down to their waist with a background.

Medium Long Shot (MLS) is when you can see the whole body of a person in a frame with little gap above their ead and below their feet. A long shot is even further away with gaps above and below.

RULE OF THIRDS

The rule of thirds is when the frame is divided up into 9 equal parts. This is done with horizontal lines 1 third of the way down and 2 thirds of the way down, also vertical lines 1 third of the way down and 2 thirds of the way down.
